Spearmint is native to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean and is the most commonly used of the mints. Mint is mentioned in Greek mythology, its name being derived from the nymph Minthe, who inspired a fit of jealousy in the goddess Persephone when she attempted to seduce Hades (Persephone’s husband). Consequently, Persephone transformed Minthe into the lowly mint plant as punishment.
Recipes often call for fresh mint, however, mint retains much of its flavor when dried, making our dried spearmint a great substitute when fresh leaves are unavailable. Spearmint has a refreshing, mellow flavor with undertones of lemon and is commonly used in lamb dishes, jellies or tossed with salads. It is also found in Greek, Middle Eastern and Turkish cuisine and is a good compliment to chicken, pork and vegetables.
