Basil is native to India, Iran, and Africa, however it is now cultivated throughout the world. Some of the best Basil is considered to come from California, as their advanced dehydration process allows for better flavor. As this basil is considered to be of the highest quality, sweet basil from California is the only basil we stock. Sweet Basil grows to about 20 inches tall with oval shaped leaves 1-4 inches long.
There are two theories as to how Basil got its name. The first is that it was derived from ‘basilikon phyton’, which is Greek for ‘kingly herb’. The other theory is that is was named after the mythical serpent the ‘basilisk’, which can kill with one look. Either way, Basil has quite a record as an important herb throughout history.
Sprinkle on pizza, pasta, eggs, fish, chicken, veal, pork, potatoes, tomatoes,or any other vegie. Dry basil can also be used as a substitute for fresh Basil if in a pinch (use 1/2 to 1/3 as much dry when substituting for fresh).
