Anise Seed Powder

Anise seed powder has a sweet, licorice-like flavor with notes of fennel. It is often used to season baked goods, such as cookies, cakes, Biscotti, and traditional Old World breads like Scandinavian rye. Anise seed’s licorice-like flavor also makes it ideal for fruit dishes and vegetable or fish curries. Ground anise seed pairs well with cinnamon and bay leaves to add a warm, spicy flavor to fish, pork and game meats. Anise seed powder can also be used as bait in rodent traps and as a natural insecticide.

Fun Fact: Anise seed has the same effect of dogs that catnip has on cats. Greyhounds and foxhounds are trained to chase and fetch prey using cloth sacks soaked in anise seed oil.
