Anise seed (also spelled aniseed) is native to the Mediterranean and Middle East and comes from the same family as cumin, caraway, fennel, and dill. Our anise seed is sourced from Turkey. Historically, anise seed was used to aid in digestion and was often consumed in cakes following large meals. In fact, it is thought that the tradition of serving cake at weddings originated from the ancient Roman practice of serving mustaceum, a cake spiced with anise seed and wrapped in bay leaves, at the end of large feasts.
Anise seed has a sweet, licorice-like flavor with notes of fennel. It is often used to season baked goods, such as cookies, cakes, Biscotti, and traditional Old World breads like Scandinavian rye. Anise seed’s licorice-like flavor also makes it ideal for fruit dishes and vegetable or fish curries. Ground anise seed pairs well with cinnamon and bay leaves to add a warm, spicy flavor to fish, pork and game meats. Anise seed powder can also be used as bait in rodent traps and as a natural insecticide.
Fun Fact: Anise seed has the same effect of dogs that catnip has on cats. Greyhounds and foxhounds are trained to chase and fetch prey using cloth sacks soaked in anise seed oil.
