The opium poppy is native to the Middle East and has been cultivated for medicinal and culinary use for more than 3,000 years. It was known to the early Egyptians, Romans and Greeks, and was being cultivated in India and China by AD 800. Today, many countries have banned the cultivation of the opium poppy due to the misuse of its mind-altering properties. Because of this, poppy seeds must be treated with heat or fumigation so they will not germinate before they can be sold freely.
Poppy seeds have a delightful nutty flavor that is enhanced by toasting and baking. They are a common ingredient in breads, muffins and cakes and are an excellent topping on bagels, noodles and salads.
