Darjeeling tea is a very special variety of tea grown only in the Darjeeling region of east India. This tea is produced on small plantations referred to as “tea estates.” All of the darjeeling tea we carry comes from a single estate in the region. Authentic darjeeling tea is protected by a Geographic Indication of Goods registration, which means its cultivation is limited to only these estates and is produced under very specific conditions. This is the same type of registration that protects French champagne and Italian prosciutto.
Technically speaking, darjeeling tea is of the oolong variety, as it has a relatively low level of oxidation. However, it is often marketed as a black tea. This “champagne” of black teas has a musky spiciness, complemented by floral notes and a cool finish.
